Summary[]
After 14 years in the major league, Goro Shigeno is forced to retire after injuring his shoulder. Unable to pitch no longer, he returns back to Japan with his family while holding on to his baseball dream, deciding to switch to a fielder position instead.
Goro spends many months in training but keeps it a secret from his children preferring them to see him at his best, playing on the field. But at the same time, his daughter, Izumi Shigeno becomes increasingly frustrated and disappointed at her father, seeing him only as a loafer who doesn’t work, while all of her friends have working fathers. Even while Goro strengthens his resolve, Goro's classmate-and-wife, Kaoru Shigeno, starts to doubt whether keeping his training a secret is a good idea while deteriorating his relationship with Izumi but gets some advice and encouragement from Goro’s stepmother.
One day while Goro is “away on a trip”, Shimizu takes their children to a baseball game, where Goro is making his Japanese major league debut, and Izumi finally sees her father on the field hardworking his and everybody's dreams for the first time.
